Learning at Silver Spruce

Wonders provides explicit instruction in foundational reading skills, vocabulary, language development, reading comprehension, and writing. Through engaging texts and meaningful learning experiences, students build the knowledge and skills necessary to become proficient readers and writers.

As part of our EL Education literacy framework, students participate in both Skills Block and All Block instruction. These structures provide dedicated time for targeted literacy learning based on student needs.

 

Skills Block focuses on developing foundational reading skills through systematic instruction in phonics, word recognition, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. All Block provides opportunities for students to receive additional support, practice, and extension as they work toward grade-level proficiency. Through flexible grouping and differentiated instruction, teachers are able to meet students where they are and help them continue to grow as readers and writers.

Our instructional practices are grounded in the Science of Reading, which is based on decades of research about how children learn to read. Through systematic and explicit instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, language comprehension, and knowledge building, we ensure students develop the foundational skills necessary for reading success.

Our literacy classrooms utilize a Workshop Model that encourages students to take ownership of their learning. Teachers provide focused instruction through mini-lessons, followed by opportunities for students to read, write, collaborate, and apply new learning independently and in small groups. This structure allows teachers to differentiate instruction while fostering student engagement, independence, and a love of reading and writing.

Silver Spruce utilizes enVision Mathematics as our core instructional resource. Through rich problem-solving experiences, hands-on learning, visual representations, and mathematical discourse, students build conceptual understanding while developing fluency and application skills. The program encourages students to explain their thinking, justify solutions, and make connections between mathematical ideas.

We believe mathematics is about more than finding answers—it is about making sense of the world around us. Students are encouraged to explore multiple approaches, learn from mistakes, and tackle complex problems with curiosity and confidence. Through productive struggle, students develop resilience and discover that challenges are growth opportunities.

Our science instruction is guided by the Colorado Academic Standards and supported by district-adopted resources and learning experiences.
