Recess and Lunch
At Silver Spruce Elementary, we are committed to creating routines that support the whole child. One intentional change we are making is moving to a recess-before-lunch model. This means students will go outside for recess first and then come inside to eat lunch.
Why Recess Before Lunch?
Research and school experience show that when students play before they eat, they are often more settled, focused, and ready to enjoy their lunch. After having time to run, move, socialize, and get their energy out, students can enter the cafeteria calmer and more prepared to eat.
Benefits for Students
Recess before lunch can help students:
- Eat more of their lunch
- Waste less food
- Have more positive social interactions
- Return to class more focused and ready to learn
- Transition more smoothly into the afternoon
This structure also supports our Silver Spruce BEST values: Belonging, Effort, Synergy, and Trustworthiness. Students practice cooperation, problem-solving, and responsibility on the playground, then move into lunch with a greater sense of calm and community.
What Families Can Expect
Students will still have time for both recess and lunch each day. Staff will continue to supervise students carefully on the playground and in the Lodge Café to ensure a safe, positive, and supportive experience. We know that eating well, moving our bodies, and building friendships are all important parts of a successful school day. Recess before lunch is one more way we are helping our Moose Crew feel healthy, connected, and ready to learn.
