Literacy at Silver Spruce Elementary

At Silver Spruce Elementary, we are committed to helping every student become a confident, capable reader and writer. Our literacy instruction aligns with the Colorado READ Act, which promotes evidence-based reading instruction grounded in the Science of Reading.

All students in grades K–5 receive a minimum of 120 minutes of daily literacy instruction. Through explicit, systematic instruction, students develop strong skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening while building a lifelong love of literacy.

Our Approach to Literacy

Our literacy program is designed to ensure every student receives high-quality instruction and the support they need to succeed.

At Silver Spruce Elementary:

  • Literacy instruction is grounded in the Science of Reading, with explicit, systematic instruction in foundational reading skills, language comprehension, vocabulary, and writing.
  • Instruction is aligned with the Colorado Academic Standards, the Colorado READ Act, and Douglas County School District Priority Learning Outcomes.
  • Students are regularly assessed to monitor growth and identify strengths and areas for additional support.
  • Teachers use assessment data to differentiate instruction, ensuring every student receives learning experiences that meet their individual needs.
  • Students who need additional support receive targeted interventions through a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS), with instruction tailored to accelerate literacy growth.

Our goal is to equip every student with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to become successful readers, writers, and lifelong learners.
